Xin Yi is an Assistant Researcher and Post Doc in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University. He received his Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University under supervision of Professor Yuanchun Shi in 2018. His research interests include computational models of human interaction behavior (e.g., pointing and touching), intelligent text entry techniques for different scenarios (e.g., tabletop, smartwatches and mid-air), and VR/AR interaction techniques. He has published more than 10 papers in prestigious conferences and journals in the field of Human Computer Interaction, including CHI, UIST, Ubicomp and IJHCS, and has won the ACM CHI 2017 Honorable Mention Award.

Dr. Yi is also the director of the Undergraduate Workgroup of the Department of Computer Science and Technology, where he organized academic events (e.g. visiting talks, doctoral forum and company visiting) to connect both the academic and the industry.

Field of Interests

With the development of user interfaces from CMD to touchscreens, users' input behavior is becoming increasingly natural, but at the cost of higher level of noise in the input signal. To this end, my research focus on input prediction algorithms and techniques, especially with the challenge of insufficient training data (i.e. without heavy machine learning models). This involves the computational modeling of human interaction behavior (e.g., speed-accuracy tradeoff of pointing behavior, finger movement model in mid-air), which serves as the prior knowledge for input prediction.

For application, I focus on text input, which is a foundamental yet challenging interaction task, and designed smart keyboard techniques (e.g., ten-finger typing on tabletop and in mid-air, eyes-free text entry on smartphones, multi-cursor keyboard for non-touch smartwatches) for various scenarios with different interaction challenges (e.g., lack of tactile and visual feedback), most of them leverages an augmented Bayesian model.

Also, with increasing popularity of VR/AR environments, I aim to facilitate the target acquisition and object retrieval experience in such scenarios. Specifically, I worked on the modeling of human's eyes-free pointing ability, and the expressivity of gesture input.
